Volleyball Player Positions and Formations

In volleyball, there are 6 players in each team and each player has a certain position. In this sport, where athletes compete in their specialised positions, there are a passer, a passer-cross, 2 middle players, a spiker and a libero.
On the volleyball court, there are 3 players in the back court and 3 players in the front court. Accordingly, there is 1 player in each position and 1 cross player for each player.
In this case, the formations are made as follows;
- The passer and the passer’s cross player play in positions 1 and 2.
- Centre blocker plays at positions 3 and 6.
- The spiker plays at position 4 and 5.
According to all this information, players playing in the same position should be placed diagonally on the court. When serving, each player is in the position where he/she should be diagonally. In case of a counter attack, each player can move to his/her own position.
The passer is the playmaker. The passer is crossed by the cross-court passer. If the passer is at number 1, the cross-court passer should be at number 4. Thus, the cross placement is realised.
There are 2 spikers on the court. One of these spikers is positioned in front of the passer and the other one is positioned diagonally.
There are 2 centre players. The centre players do not move to the back position. They change places with the libero after the service rounds. The libero is only in the back position. Libero and centre players are positioned diagonally. The libero is a defensive player. Therefore, the game is most frequent in the libero position.
Volleyball Court Arrangement with the Ball in the Team

The expected starting position when the ball is on the team, i.e. when serving, is as shown in the figure on the left. Because it is the position where the passer is behind and will stay behind for 3 rounds. During these 3 rounds, it is played as a 3-point attacking round. At the same time, the number 4 spiker in the back court can also be involved in the attack by attacking back so that there can be 4 attackers.
Volleyball Court Arrangement when the Opponent has the Ball

When the ball is in the opponent’s court, the expected starting position is as shown in the figure on the left. This is because the passer is playing his last position in the front rounds and after the first reception round won, he will come back and the team will return to a round of 3.
